クルミくんに病気がみつかりました。今朝、トリマーさんが指摘してくれて、早速獣医に診せたところ明日、手術することになりました。犬特有の病気のようです。腸が身体の中で移動してしまい、排便に障害を起こす「会陰（えいん）ヘルニア」という病気だそうです。急変したものではなく、徐々に腸の場所が変化して気づくようになったみたいです。以前からも排便の調子が良くなかったのはこれが原因かも知れません。歳をとっていますが、心臓の様子も良好なようで、獣医は手術を決断しました。今日はいつものように一緒に過ごして、明日の朝、クルミくんは入院です。私たちは獣医を信頼して、クルミくんが元気になって帰ってくることを願うだけです。

Kurumi has been found to be sick. The trimmer pointed it out to us this morning and we immediately took him to the vet and he will have surgery tomorrow. It seems to be a dog-specific disease. It is a disease called “hernia of the perineum” in which the intestines move inside the body and cause problems with defecation. It is not a sudden change, but rather a gradual change in the location of the intestines that it has come to notice. This may be the reason why his bowel movements have not been good even before. Although he is getting older, his heart seems to be doing well and the vet has decided to operate. Today we will spend time together as usual, and tomorrow morning Kurumi will be admitted to the hospital. We just trust the vet and hope that Kurumi will come back home in good health.

大学での講義も後 4 回を残すになってしまいました。先週から席替えをするようになって、今日も学生と一緒に翻訳の講義を受けることができました。短い時間なので学生との会話を楽しむことはできませんが、英文を一緒に翻訳するのは楽しいものです。クルミくんは今日も陽の暖かさに包まれて昼寝を楽しんでいました。

I have only four more lectures left at the university. Since last week, we have started to change seats, so I was able to attend the translation lecture with a student again today. It is a short lecture, so I can’t enjoy talking with the student, but it is fun to translate English sentences together with them. Kurumi was enjoying a nap in the warmth of the sun today.

朝のニュースでは週末荒れた天気のことが報じられていました。息子たちが訪れた観光地も雪のために混乱が起きているようです。海外からの観光客がレンタカーで訪れて困っている様子も報じられていました。急激に冬が近づいていることを感じます。クルミくんは私の顔を見ると庭に出すように訴えてきます。夕方になって冷えてきたのですが、クルミくんは元気に走り回っていました。

The morning news reported on the rough weather over the weekend. The tourist destinations my sons visited also seemed to be in disarray due to the snow. It was also reported that tourists from overseas were having trouble with their rental cars. I feel that winter is rapidly approaching. When Kurumi sees my face, he appeals to me to let him out into the garden. It was getting cold in the evening, but Kurumi was running around energetically.

風が強かった昨日から一転して今日は穏やかで暖かい日となりました。そんな暖かさに誘われて毎年行われているイチョウ祭りに行ってみました。国道のイチョウ並木が黄色くなる頃に行われているこのお祭りに今年も多くの人が来ていました。クルミくんは今日も元気に遊んでいます。

After yesterday’s windy weather, today was a calm and warm day. Such warmth lured me to the annual Ginkgo Festival. This festival is held when the ginkgo trees along the national road turn yellow, and many people came this year as well. Kurumi is playing energetically today.

今年の春先に入手した丸太ですが、このままの長さで薪として割るには無理があると思い、半分の長さに切断しました。森で楢枯れした木なので中には虫が入り込んでいます。こんな奥まで穴を開けて入り込んでいるのを見ると驚きます。全ての丸太を切り終えたら汗をかいていました。クルミくんも庭に出たいというので少し歩かせました。今日も陽の暖かさに感謝した一日でした。

I obtained this log earlier this spring and cut it in half length because I thought it was too long to split as firewood as it was. It is a dead oak tree in the forest, so there are insects inside. It is amazing to see them burrowing this deep into the wood. I was sweating when I finished cutting all the logs. Kurumi also wanted to go out in the garden, so I let him walk around a bit. It was another day of being thankful for the warmth of the sun.

気がつけば暦の上ではすっかり冬になっています。ショッピングモールはクリスマスの飾り付けが綺麗です。今日は終日、出社していたのでクルミくんと遊ぶ時間はありませんでした。帰宅後も夜に設定された電話会議があり、久しぶりに仕事漬けの一日でした。以前はこのような日が毎日連続していたのですが、ひさしぶりこんな日があるとぐったりと疲れてしまいます。でも明日は週末、リフレッシュします。

The calendar has turned to winter already. Shopping malls are beautifully decorated for Christmas. I was at work all day today, so I did not have time to play with Kurumi. Even after I got home, I had a conference call set for the evening, so it was the first day in a while that I was fully occupied with work. I used to have days like this every day in a row, but it’s been a while since I’ve had a day like this, and I’m exhausted. But tomorrow is the weekend and I will refresh myself.

クルミくんは犬なので、彼は人間の言葉を話すことはできません。でも、私たちはクルミくんが何を言っているのか分かります。これだけ長く一緒に生活してきたので当たり前かも知れません。ストーブの前で「寒いから暖かくして」と言ったり、「お腹が空いた」と言ったり、彼が起きている間、一緒に話しています。今日も昼間は陽の暖かさがあったので薪ストーブは使いませんでした。

Since Kurumi is a dog, he cannot speak human language. But we can understand what Kurumi is saying. It may be natural since we have lived together for such a long time. We talk together while he is awake, saying “It’s cold, so warm up” in front of the stove, or “I’m hungry. We didn’t use the wood stove today because the sun was warm during the day.

私たち夫婦の今後について考えることが多くなりました。この先、何年働らくことができるのか、どちらかが介護を要するようになるのか、そして何歳でこの世をさることになるのか。考え始めると止まりません。その日まで働いていられることが望みです。しかし何が起こるか予想すらもできません。クルミくんは昨夜もすこし調子を崩していました。陽の当たらない日はストーブの前でのんびりしていました。

I have been thinking a lot about the future of my wife and I. How long will I be able to work, will one of us need nursing care, and at what age will I leave this world? When I start thinking about it, I can’t stop. I hope to be able to work until that day. But I can’t even predict what will happen. Kurumi was a little out of sorts last night. He was relaxing in front of the stove on a day when the sun was not shining.

今日も大学の講義テストでは 80 点しか取れませんでした。毎週、採点結果を見る度に学生時代を思い出します。早合点して記載してしまった回答が間違っていることがありました。そsて、今も同じ失敗を繰り返している自分がここにいます。情けないのですが、これが自分なのだと改めて思います。今日も講義を終えた私を青空が迎えてくれました。クルミくんは私が帰ると昼寝の最中でした。そして、夜は久しぶりに兄と会食をしました。久しぶりにお互いの境遇を話す機会を持つことができました。

Today, I scored only 80 on my college lecture test. Every week, every time I look at the grading results, I am reminded of my student days. There were times when the answers I gave were incorrect because I made a hasty decision. And here I am, repeating the same mistakes. It’s shameful, but I realize once again that this is who I am. Today, too, the blue sky welcomed me after I finished my lecture. Kurumi was taking a nap when I left. At night, I had dinner with my brother for the first time in a while. For the first time in a while, we had a chance to talk about each other’s circumstances.

妻と二人でインフルエンザの予防接種を受けてきました。急に気温が下がって、インフルエンザも流行しているようです。左腕の接種箇所が少し痛みますが、副反応は無いようで安心しています。いつでも薪ストーブが使えるように今日は焚き付けようの薪を用意しました。クルミくんは今日も元気に過ごしています。昨日まで賑やかだった家の中が静かになって寂しい気分です。

My wife and I have been getting flu vaccutination. The temperature has suddenly dropped and the flu seems to be spreading. The inoculation point on my left arm is a little sore, but there seems to be no adverse reaction, so I am relieved. I have prepared wood for the fire today so that we can use the wood stove anytime we want. Kurumi is doing well today. He feels sad that the house, which was so lively until yesterday, has become quiet.
