私は 6 月から会員となって日本語を勉強する人をサポートしています。日曜日には年に一度のスピーチ大会がありました。私がサポートしている C さんも参加して 4 分間、日本語で上手にスピーチすることができました。一緒にストーリーを考えて、文面をわかりやすくして、そして本番に臨みました。14 人の中で最優秀賞には選ばれませんでしたが、その次の優秀賞を受賞して C さんは喜んでいました。私もホッと安心した一日でした。クルミくんの体調は毎日変化しています。昨日喜んで食べた餌を今日は全く食べません。そんな繰り返しの毎日です。

I have been supporting people studying Japanese since June. This past Sunday, we held our annual speech contest. C-san, whom I support, participated and delivered a well-done speech in Japanese for four minutes. Together, we came up with a story, made the wording clear, and prepared for the big day. Although C-san wasn’t awarded the top prize out of 14 participants, C-san did receive the excellence award, and was very happy about it. It was a day that left me feeling relieved as well. Kurumi’s health varies from day to day. What he eagerly ate yesterday, he won’t touch today. It’s a daily cycle like this.

私は久しぶりに都心まで業務の目的で出かけました。立っていた時間が長かったので、帰りは特急電車の指定席を予約して座って帰ることにしました。座席に座ってみると、座席毎に LED 表示があって、緑は指定済み、黄は途中から乗ってくる人がいる、赤は空席、と分かるようになっていました。もし、指定券を買い忘れて乗ってしまった場合は赤の席に座ると良いようです。社内で車掌に精算できるようです。オンラインで繋がっていることが身の回りで便利に活用されています。私は帰宅してからクルミくんの世話をしました。夕方、針を刺す私のことをクルミくんは覚えてしまいました。

I went to the city center for business purposes for the first time in a while. Since I had been standing for a long time, I decided to reserve a seat on the limited express train for the return trip to sit comfortably. When I sat down, I noticed that each seat had an LED display: green meant the seat was reserved, yellow indicated that someone would board later, and red showed it was unoccupied. If you happen to board without a reserved ticket, it seems you can sit in a red seat. It appears the conductor can process the fare adjustment on board. It’s nice to see how online connectivity is being conveniently applied in daily life. After I got home, I took care of Kurumi. In the evening, it seems Kurumi remembered me as the person who pricks him with a needle.

この家を建てて 24 年になりました。テラスの樹脂部品が紫外線で壊れてしまったので交換作業をしてみました。全ての手すりを外して、15 個の部品を入れ替えました。また 20 年もすれば壊れてしまいますが、その時にはこの家もどうなっているか分かりません。しばらくは綺麗な状態を保ってくれるでしょう。隙間から雨水が入らないようにシールしてみました。素人作業なので出来栄えはまずますです。クルミくんはトリミングに行ってきてスッキリしてきました。毎日の点滴も欠かさずに行っています。針を刺す瞬間がお互いに好きではありません。

It has been 24 years since we built this house. The resin parts of the terrace broke due to UV exposure, so I tried replacing them. I removed all the railings and swapped out 15 parts. They will probably break again in another 20 years, but by then, who knows what will become of this house. For now, it should remain in good condition. I also sealed it to prevent rainwater from seeping in through the gaps. As an amateur job, the result is fairly decent. Kurumi went for grooming and came back looking neat. We are also making sure not to miss his daily IV drips. Neither of us likes the moment the needle goes in, though.

自宅で皮下点滴を行うようになって、クルミくんは獣医院まで行かずに済んでいます。通院にかかる時間は長いので、とても助かっています。クルミくんは小さいので私は一番細い注射針を使って点滴をしています。細いと時間がかかるのですが、痛みは少ないと信じています。どうしても針を刺す時は緊張してしまいます。最近、スナックや煮干しをよく食べるのでドッグフードも混ぜて食べさせています。最後は数粒残してしまいますが、少しでもドッグフードが体に入れば良いと思っています。先週末、良い天気が続いたのでテラスの造作を補修しました。最近はウレタン系の材料が増えてきたので長持ちするかもしれません。

Since starting subcutaneous drips at home, Kurumi no longer needs to go to the veterinary clinic. It’s a big help because the trips to the clinic take a long time. Since Kurumi is small, I use the thinnest needle for the drip. It takes more time with a thinner needle, but I believe it causes less pain. I still get nervous when I have to insert the needle. Lately, Kurumi has been enjoying snacks and dried sardines, so I’ve been mixing in dog food as well. Although Kurumi leaves a few pieces behind, I think it’s good if even a little dog food gets eaten. Last weekend, the weather stayed nice, so I repaired the terrace structure. With more polyurethane-based materials available now, it might last longer.

クルミくんと毎日通っている獣医院の前は銀杏並木です。ことしも銀杏が落ちてくる季節になりました。夏の暑さが影響したのか、木には多くの銀杏が生っています。この獣医院はとても混んでいて、いつも待たされてしまいます。10 分程度の点滴のために 1 時間も待つのは大変なので、今日から私が点滴を行うこととして、獣医にトレーニングしてもらいました。さて、緊張しますが、今日からは獣医院で待つ必要がありません。しばらく自分でやったみます。

In front of the veterinary clinic that Kurumi and I visit every day, there is a row of ginkgo trees. The season when the ginkgo nuts start to fall has arrived again this year. Perhaps due to the effects of the summer heat, many ginkgo nuts are growing on the trees. This veterinary clinic is very crowded, and we always end up waiting. Waiting for an hour just for a 10-minute IV drip is exhausting, so starting today, I had the vet train me to administer the IV myself. I feel nervous, but from now on, we won’t have to wait at the clinic. I’ll try doing it myself for a while.

クルミくんは腎臓の機能が急に低下してしまい、今週は毎日、病院で点滴を受けました。昨日、腎臓の数値が回復したので、今日は入院する必要がなくなりましたが、皮下点滴を受けるために通院は続けなければなりません。皮下点滴は自宅でもできるようなのですが、医療行為を自分で行う自信がありません。細い腕に止血テープを巻かれたクルミくんは痛さを我慢していました。

Kurumi’s kidney function suddenly declined, and this week he received IV drips at the hospital every day. Yesterday, his kidney levels improved, so he no longer needs to be hospitalized today. However, he still needs to continue visiting the hospital for subcutaneous fluid therapy. It seems that subcutaneous drips can be administered at home, but I’m not confident in performing medical procedures myself. Kurumi, with a bandage wrapped around his thin arm, was enduring the pain.

私は、今年の春から計画していた北海道旅行に行ってきました。学生時代から付き合っている友人 6 人で北海道に初めて訪れました。今年 70 歳を迎える私たちをお互いに祝い、これからもお互いに健康で過ごせることを祈願してきました。二白三日の旅は良い天気に恵まれて、私たちの思い出となりました。

I went on a trip to Hokkaido that I had been planning since this spring. It was the first time for us six friends, who I have known since our school days, to visit Hokkaido. We celebrated each other’s 70th birthday this year and prayed for continued good health for all of us. Our two-night, three-day trip was blessed with good weather, making it a memorable experience for us.

先週からクルミの容体が悪くなってきて、獣医に診てもらいました。腎臓の機能が低下しているようで、食欲も低下してしまいました。昨年末に手術を受けてから腎臓の機能が低下し始めたのですが、数値が 5 倍に跳ね上がっています。食事が喉を通らないと衰退してしまうので、点滴を受けています。今週はほぼ毎日、獣医に通っています。残念なことですが、腎臓の機能は回復することはなく、これ以上の悪化をいかにして止めるか、が鍵となっています。夜、何度となく起きるので、妻と交替で介護しています。体重が減ってしまったクルミくんは少し辛そうです。

Last week, Kurumi’s condition started to deteriorate and we took him to the vet. His kidneys seem to be failing and he has lost his appetite. His kidney function started to decline after his surgery late last year and the numbers have jumped 5 times. He is on intravenous fluids because he declines when he can’t pass food down his throat. He has been to the vet almost every day this week. Unfortunately, his kidney function will never recover and the key is how to stop from deteriorating further. My wife and I take turns caring for him as he wakes up several times a night. Kurumi, who has lost a lot of weight, seems to be having a bit of a hard time.

庭の木に鳥の巣箱を取り付けました。来年もまた四十雀が営巣してくれることを期待しています。応急修理をした郵便受けを新品と交換してみました。このタイプはレンガを積み上げる過程で埋め込んでいくものなので、交換作業はとても大変でした。先ずは古い郵便受けの周囲に埋まっているモルタルを削っていき、取り外してしまいます。新しい郵便受けの大きさに合うようにレンガを少しずつ削って埋め込んでみました。周囲に隙間ができてしまいましたので、シリコーンラバーを購入して補修する予定です。今回はシックなグレー色にしてみました。クルミくんは昨日から食欲が無く心配しています。

I have set bird nest boxes in the trees. We hope to have chickadee nesting there again next year. I replaced the mailbox with a new one that I did emergency repairs on. This type of mailbox is embedded in the process of building up the bricks, so the replacement process was very difficult. The first step is to scrape away the mortar that is embedded around the old mailbox and remove it. I scraped off a little bit of the brick to fit the size of the new mailbox and embedded it. There is now a gap around it, which I plan to repair by purchasing silicone rubber. This time I decided on a chic gray color. Kurumi has lost his appetite since yesterday and we are worried about him.

秋が感じられるようになってきました。クルミくんを連れてドライブに行ってきました。毎年訪れているりんご農家でりんごを買って、最近開店したレストランで食事をして、妻は買い物を楽しんできました。クルミくんと同じ犬種を連れている夫婦と会話を楽しむことができました。聞けば近所に住んでいるようで、これからも時々、会えそうです。

Autumn is in the air. I took Kurumi for a drive. We bought apples at an apple farm that we visit every year, ate at a recently opened restaurant, and my wife enjoyed shopping. We enjoyed talking with a couple who had the same breed of dog as Kurumi. They live nearby and it looks like we will be seeing each other from time to time.
